More about EZARD, Melbourne CBD

EZARD Melbourne is an extremely stylish restaurant but one that never tries too hard. The dining space is chic and modern, yet simple enough to ensure the magnificent food is allowed to do all of the talking. This is one of the many, many reasons why EZARD Melbourne has earnt two hats in the 20 years since it has been established, as well as the time, dedication and flair that chef Teage Ezard ensures goes into the food. He loves to make use of the finest Australian produce but is also known in the industry for his ability to balance the Thai flavour profiles of salty, sour, hot and sweet.

So what can you eat at EZARD Melbourne? Head to Flinders Lance to enjoy eight- or five-course tasting menus that can be vegetarian or vegan if you wish, with beverage and non-alcoholic beverage pairing available as well. Then there’s the a la carte menu featuring mains like Chinese-style duck with black rice, roasted chilli, Japanese turnip and spring onion, and desserts like glazed lemon tart with mandarin, almond crumble and sheeps yoghurt. Monday to Thursday EZARD offers a choice between one of the signature tasting menus, either five or eight courses, or the standard a la carte. Then on Friday and Saturday there’s a choice between the signature eight-course tasting menu or a fixed price three course option. If all this sounds up your alley, reserve a table now.

Was really looking forward to this dinner to celebrate our wedding anniversary with my wife. We’d never been to Ezard before and had a lot of people tell us how good it was. First impressions were good, if a little rowdy and noisy, but the table was very nice with my wife afforded a panoramic view of the room’s action from the banquette. The maitre’d offered us a drink as soon as we sat down, which came quickly. Then our waiter (Stuart) appeared and mumbled through the menu, which couldn’t be heard over the background din, and scurried away. Then we waited… and waited… and waited… after 25 mins I announced to another waiter clearing an adjacent table that we were ready to order and she retrieved our waiter again who took our orders. Then we waited, and waited, and waited some more. Over the next hour and a half we received three starters which were a mouthful each, admittedly very tasty though. My wife noticed the service from the waiter was clumsy too, with cutlery placed randomly on the table and he reached across our faces to fill glasses. Finally, after being there for 2 hours, our main courses arrived and were underwhelmingly small. My wife ordered the waygu beef and it arrived as 3 or 4 tiny 1 cm cubes. Where the starters were a mouthful, the mains were two or three mouthfuls, but again they were delicious. After the main we changed our desert order from the platter to the single items so that we could get out before our babysitter fossilised at home. The the bill arrived and for what we received in terms of service and food quantity, we were disappointed. We spent too much, were there for way too long and received too little.

I found that the restaurant was very noisy, and I had trouble hearing and understanding the waiters description of the 8 courses that we had. Also why do restaurants have such small writing on the menus, difficult to read. Nothing in the 8 courses really wowed me, except for the Oyster shooter. The wine waiter was very good and knowledgeable and they have an excellent wine list. For what you get though, I think it is way over priced. I wont go back in a hurry

About

EZARD is Chef Teage Ezard’s eponymous fine diner, and one of the most respected dining institutions in Melbourne.

Over nineteen years on and still going strong: When Teage Ezard launched his flagship restaurant EZARD in 1999, he quickly earnt a reputation as one of the city’s leading exponents of degustation dining.

Today, that reputation is undiminished. Not only was Teage the first chef to see the potential of Flinders Lane as a hot dining precinct, he was also a forerunner of a type of cooking known as “Australian Freestyle”, in which chefs freely take ideas and techniques from elsewhere – particularly Southeast Asia – and apply them to Australian produce. Teage also became known for his skill in balancing the Thai flavour profiles of salty, sour, hot and sweet.

Having established EZARD as one of Melbourne’s best fine dining venues, Teage opened its more casual and boisterous sibling, Gingerboy, in a classic inner-city laneway in 2006. Again, he was ahead of his time, with Gingerboy blazing a trail for the widespread adoption of Asian street food in a smart restaurant context.

While EZARD the flagship has consistently maintained chef’s hats in The Age Good Food Guide (now The Good Food Guide), Teage’s team take a relaxed approach to the restaurant’s fine-dining status, delivering service that is precise yet informal.

With two successful restaurants, his enduring contributions to the Australian culinary scene, a youthful, forward-looking approach to modern Australian cuisine and a sense of fun that informs all his endeavours, Teage continues to be regarded as one of the country’s most prominent chefs.

This is as I visit the, EZARD restaurant today.

The Zard Restaurant is very reserved restaurant and it very hinted as well. Is not easy to notice where it located but when looking at the numbers and if you know what it looks like than is the only way you may not miss it.

When entering this is the sign you would see at the front of the building.

As you look inside to go in you have to stride in front of you, one going up and the other one going down. If you take your time look at both entering into the Interior. Will notice that Ezard entering has the decorations in front of it as you enter which the stirs is going down. The decorations is very inviting and welcome.

As you enter into the restaurant the front door is designed with glass and when you do get in the restaurant they have this private area just at the front in a corner. Than they have a space where you can sit down and rest or relax while having your food.

Busness card

Further down is the main restaurant area where’s which that has a lot of Chairs for any one or any group of people wanting to just have dinner.  Than right at the back is the kitchen and in front of it is the counter for customers to pay for their for and also where the have phone display.

The restaurant is a very small space. I believe is Design for not a big group number of people like any other restaurant I have been to. The restaurant is considering to be one of the romantic restaurant in Melbourne CBD.
