Section One: Introduction
- Introduce the text by title, date, author and main idea
- Briefly list the author’s qualifications (experience) and credentials (academic degrees)
- Add background info on the topic as needed
- Write your thesis statement (evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the article)
Section Two: Summary
- Focus on the main idea and all relevant sub-ideas.
- Do not focus on minor examples or details; do not quote in a summary.
Section Three: Analysis
- Is the article well-organized? What rhetorical patterns are used to present the content of the article?
- Does the author use a clear language? Are important terms (key terms) defined?
- Is the argument logical? Comment on the author’s appeal to logos.
- Is there sufficient evidence for the arguments? Focus on the author’s use of facts, studies, surveys, statistics, quotations, expert opinions and illustration (specific examples)
- Is the information accurate?
- Does the author over rely on one strategy? (for example over reliance on statistics, or over reliance on the opinion of one expert)
- Does the author over rely on one source?
- Does the author over rely on the appeal to pathos?
- Are there any fallacies?
- Does the author present the opposing party’s point of view?
- Is there an evident appeal to ethos?
Section Four: Response & Conclusion
- Remind the readers of the strengths and weaknesses of the article.
- Which points do you agree on with the author?
- Which points do you disagree on?
- Overall, do you find the article credible? Why or why not?
- What are your recommendations to improve the article?
